Description
Bust of Emile Verhaeren in patinated plaster by César Schroevens.
Trained in sculpture at the Antwerp Academy, he worked with François Joris, then his uncle, the famous sculptor Jef Lambeaux.
He took part in numerous artistic events, including the 3rd Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1913, the inauguration of the Salle des Fêtes in Antwerp in 1908, and the Salon Triennal of the Société Royale d'Encouragement des Arts.
The bust of Emile Verhaeren was exhibited in the Belgian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Versions of this bust are held in the Bibliothèque Communale d'Anvers, the Salle de Réunion du Sénat and the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers.
This bust is a reminder of the international influence and importance of Emile Verhaeren, the French-speaking Belgian poet, in the literary and artistic avant-garde.
